In need of a Spiritual Adjustment?

Isn't it amazing to know that the human body has the natural ability to heal itself when under the right conditions?

Today, many of us visit a chiropractic practice to be given "adjustments" to our body. A chiropractor's job is to help create an environment which enables our body to ease into it's natural healing process. A chiropractor will focus on the health of the human backbone (spine) being properly aligned as it is central to everything the body does and experiences. This is because the nerves that travel through our spinal canal carry messages (incoming and outgoing) between the brain and the rest of the body; therefore the backbone plays an integral role in the proper function of our nervous system. If there are shifts, "adjustments" are made to help the spine come back into alignment.

I began to think about the importance in life of receiving "spiritual adjustments" from God. Like our human backbone, our "spiritual backbone" is vital in providing us support and structure; helping to keep us balanced and stable. The word "backbone" is defined as the chief support of a system, also being referred to as a cornerstone, foundation, or pillar.

Luke 6:47-48 says: "As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built."

The rock-solid foundation of the Word of God is what provides us support and structure and helps to keep us balanced and stable, ensuring that when we build our lives grounded in Him, we will be able to stand strong when the trials of life might come crashing down upon us. We know we can keep our "spiritual backbones" strong and healthy when we continually apply the Word of God to our lives.

But, there will come times when our "spiritual backbone" requires a "spiritual adjustment" when we find our mind, will or emotion "shifting" out of place with the Holy Spirit.

The human backbone protects the passageway of nerves that relay messages to the rest of our body. When the spinal cord is damaged or there is a misalignment in the spine, these messages may not be sent or received as the body had intended.

Likewise, in order for the Holy Spirit to be able to flow through us freely, we need to be willing to deal with any obstructions in our lives that would prevent Him from working through us as He intends. When our mind, will, and emotion do not cooperate with the Spirit, but rather contradicts the Spirit, we find our self being misaligned with the Spirit of God and in a weakened state.

It is so important to keep our mind, will and emotions aligned with God so our "spiritual backbone" stays strong and healthy.

2 Corinthians 10:5 says "We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."

Romans 12:2 says "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

Ephesians 4:22-24 says "You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness."

When you find yourself misaligned with the Spirit of God, it is important to be willing to leave your own perceived wishes, wants and needs and allow yourself to be adjusted to Him and allow the Spirit to govern.

Romans 8:6 says "The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace."

It isn't always comfortable to receive "adjustments" from God, sometimes it can really hurt, but He desires to correct and strengthen our "spiritual backbones". Through repentance, we show ourselves open to God and place ourselves into a position to receive the "adjustments" He needs to do in our lives. So, instead of seeing it as "failure", we can see it as an opportunity for inner healing and growth in the knowledge of the Lord.

It is so important to allow God to continually make "adjustments" throughout our lives. As we allow Him to make ongoing and much-needed "adjustments", we move closer to becoming perfectly and completely aligned with Him.

So I pray today Lord, for myself and others that our hearts would be open to You to be continually adjusted by You and that Your Spirit would reveal to us when our will, mind and emotions get in the way. I pray that You give us the strength needed to allow Your Spirit to govern our lives and bring us closer to Your heart, to Your will, and to the ways of Your Kingdom. Amen.
